Gas Burning Devices

Gas Installation Permits

Before work begins on any gas installation, the installer must apply for and receive a gas installation permit

Installations in Single Family Dwellings

Yukon’s Building Safety & Standards branch recommends that licensed Yukon gas contractors install all gas burning devices.

Homeowners of single family dwellings who wish to perform the work themselves may obtain a gas installation permit after successful completion of a knowledge-testing questionnaire. Those approved to do their own work must apply for the permit, pay applicable fees, complete the work themselves, and reside or plan to reside on the property for at least one year.

Permits for All Other Installations

Only licensed Yukon gas contractors may apply for gas installation permits related to work in commercial or public buildings, or in residential buildings that are duplexes, have a rental suite or a commercial attachment of any kind. All permits must be in place before work begins. Drawings may be required on commercial or institutional installations before permits are issued.

Yukon Licensed Gas Contractors

A gas contractor’s license may be issued to any person who:

(a) intends to engage in the business authorized by the
     license; and
(b) furnishes a bond in accordance with the regulations;
(c) is licensed as a gas fitter, or
(d) employs at least one person who is licensed under the
     appropriate class

Gas Fitters Licenses

Building Safety Branch will issue gas fitters licenses to those who:

(a) have complied with the Trades Qualifications Regulations
and hold a Trades Qualification Certificate as a gas fitter, or
(b) hold an approved equivalent certificate of competency from
     another jurisdiction, and
(c) successfully complete the Yukon Liquid Propane Gas Addendum
     Examination

Gas Installation Inspections

Once a permit has been issued, Building Safety will inspect gas installations upon request. This inspection is required before a vent or chimney serving a gas appliance is enclosed or put into service.

Installers must allow 72 business hours for the inspection following the request. All installations in the Yukon must conform to the National Code of Canada CSA B.149.

All propane appliances must be certified by an organization accredited by the Standards Council of Canada. Please call Building Safety if you are unsure of the certification.

Annual Maintenance

Building Safety encourages annual maintenance to ensure all gas installations are working safely and efficiently. Homeowners are encouraged to contact their propane supplier for information regarding use of propane in extremely cold temperatures.
