Insurance Act
The Office of the Superintendent of Insurance comes under the Consumer and Protective Services Branch. To protect consumers the office licenses insurance companies and monitors their financial status and business practices. Issues such as requests for a rate increase are reviewed and approved or denied by the Superintendent. The office also licenses the intermediaries such as agents and may investigate complaints against them.

Effective January 1, 2003, all new life insurance applicants must take the Life Licensing Qualification Program (LLQP) to qualify for licensing in Canada.
