NOTICE REGARDING REGULATION OF PHYSIOTHERAPISTS
We are pleased to advise that the Physiotherapists Regulation, governing the practice of physiotherapy in Yukon, was passed by the Yukon Government and will come into effect on April 1, 2007. Physiotherapists are the first health professionals to become regulated under the Health Professions Act, umbrella legislation which was developed to accommodate regulation of a variety of health professions. Yukon is the first territory to join with the Canadian provinces in regulating the practice of physiotherapy.
This initiative supports the government’s priority of ensuring Yukoners receive the best possible health service and hospital care by providing a regulatory mechanism to ensure all individuals providing physiotherapy services in the Yukon are accredited professionals. The Regulation also ensures that professional practice standards, ethics and education requirements are consistent with those throughout other Canadian jurisdictions.
The Regulation was drafted cooperatively by a working group comprised of practicing physiotherapists and representatives from the Departments of Health and Social Services, Community Services and Justice. Consultation with the general public and medical community provided further insight from stakeholders with a vested interest in the governance of physiotherapists in Yukon.
