Search and Rescue (SAR)

Search and Rescue Organization

The organization of ground and inland water Search and Rescue (SAR) teams began in the Yukon in 1990 under the Emergency Measures Organization. There are currently eight active SAR teams operating throughout the Territory:

  • Beaver Creek Search and Rescue Team
  • Carcross Area Rescue Team Association - CARTA
  • Carmacks Search and Rescue Team – CSAR
  • Faro Search and Rescue Society
  • Klondike Search and Rescue
  • Kluane Search and Rescue – KSAR
  • Search and Rescue Society of Teslin
  • Whitehorse District Search and Rescue Society - WDSAR
  • There are over 200 SAR volunteers permanently registered throughout the Yukon Territory.

The RCMP leads all ground and inland water search missions outside of National Parks. Many of these searches have been coordinated with assistance from the Yukon's Emergency Measures Organization. These SAR call outs have averaged one a month for the last few years and have ranged from urban searches for children and Alzheimer patients to wilderness searches for recreationalists, hunters and boaters.
