Department of Community Services

Emergency Medical Services

Throughout the Yukon, Emergency Medical Services personnel and volunteers are responsible for the emergency transportation of the sick and injured from the scene to the nearest health care facility able to provide the required level of care. Transportation is by ground or air.

Emergency Medical Services provides both in-territory and out-of-territory air medevac services to residents and non residents.

The Whitehorse, Watson Lake and Dawson City stations are 24-hour service staffed by Primary Care Paramedics (PCP). All other Yukon communities are served by volunteer ambulance attendants who are trained by the Yukon government and who work closely with nurses (Community Nurse Practitioners) in rural communities.  With the exception of Old Crow, all communities have one or more ambulances which are maintained by Emergency Medical Services.

Ground or air transportation is an insured service in the Yukon for Yukon residents.  Non-Yukon residents will be billed directly for transportation

The Whitehorse Service employs four full time ground crews of three people, and six part time medevac crews consisting of two people each.  The territorial call volume is about 1290 in communities and 3930 in Whitehorse.  The Whitehorse based dispatcher is responsible for all 911 calls and for communication with the other Yukon communities.  911 is only available in Whitehorse and within a 50 mile radius of Whitehorse.
