All employers must pay employees the hourly minimum wage or higher.Minimum wage is calculated in accordance with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for Whitehorse and is adjusted on April 1 each year. This year, the minimum wage includes a 2.4% increase in the CPI and a $0.90 increase as set by the Employment Standards Board after conducting its 2018 review.

Research to determine minimum wage

In 2019, the Minister of Community Services asked the Employment Standards Board to consider four criteria when considering increases for 2020 and 2021:

o Changes in the annual Consumer Price Index
o A Comparison and monitoring of other jurisdictions
o An economic impact analysis of additional increases, and
o Any other relevant information that the board chose to evaluate.

The Yukon Department of Finance commissioned the fall 2019 Economic evaluation of proposed changes to the minimum wage and provided it to the Employment Standards Board to consider in making its recommendation.
