Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #15 June 13, 2005 - 10:00 AM New Lightning Fire in Dawson District The Dawson fire tower reported a new fire near Deadwood Creek on Saturday. Deadwood Creek is near the Top of the World Highway. Fire crews and a helicopter out of Dawson responded to the 0.1 hectare fire, which is thought to be caused by lightning. The DC-6 airtanker group, which was day-based in Mayo, also worked on the fire on Saturday. Later that day heavy rains fell on the fire and crews pulled off. WFM will be monitoring the Deadwood Creek fire this week. It is not threatening any values. Meanwhile, the MODIS satellite detection system picked up one new fire over the weekend. It is a holdover fire from Dawson fire #31 from 2004 and is in the wilderness zone. WFM will be assessing the fire this week. Each year, many wildfires in the Yukon are caused by the carelessness of people. During fire season, our boreal forest can become extremely dry and susceptible to a wildfire spreading rapidly. A discarded cigarette, an abandoned campfire, or a wind-driven backyard fire are possible causes of wildfires that could end up threatening whole communities and our rural and recreational areas. Wildland Fire Management asks the public to do their part: enjoy our beautiful Yukon wilderness but respect fire and be very careful if you are conducting any outdoor burning or making a campfire. There have been twenty fires this season burning approximately 27 hectares, most of which have been human-caused. -30- For Yukon Wildfire updates, call 1-800-826-4750 Current Fire Danger Ratings |
