Wildfire Bulletin #16

June 15, 2005 - 10:30 AM

Three New Yukon Fires Confirmed Yesterday

Wildland Fire Management (WFM) responded to two of three new lightning-caused fires reported in the Yukon yesterday.

Watson Lake confirmed its first fire this season after a member of the public reported seeing smoke across from the Frances Lake campground.  WFM sent an initial attack crew by helicopter to extinguish the 0.1 hectare fire.  It will be officially declared out later today.

Mayo’s first fire of the year was reported fifteen kilometers southwest of a mining camp in WFM’s transitional zone.  The fire, burning at approximately 15 hectares, was worked on by a DC-6 airtanker and four initial attack crews last night; two from Dawson and two from Mayo.  The crews will continue to work along with a helicopter on the fire today.

Mayo #2 was found by WFM on the way to a fire in the Dawson district.  At 0.5 hectares, it is burning in the area of Red Mountain in WFM’s wilderness zone.  The fire is currently being assessed.

In other news, Dawson #4, a holdover fire from 2004, was picked up by the MODIS fire detection satellite last weekend.  It has been confirmed to be burning at approximately 890 hectares and is not threatening any values.  WFM will continue to monitor the fire.

The Yukon received over four hundred lightning strikes yesterday, many of which were in central Yukon. A fixed wing patrol of this area is being sent out today to look for any new fires.

There have been twenty-four fires this season burning approximately 932 hectares.
