Wildfire Bulletin #17

Carmacks Reports New Fire Yesterday

Wildland Fire Management (WFM) confirmed one new fire yesterday.

In Carmacks, WFM responded to a 0.1 hectare lightning caused fire yesterday in the Tatlmain Lake area with Initial Attack crews, a helicopter and an air tanker. Crews were successful in knocking down the fire last night and will be back on the fire again today with a helicopter.

Meanwhile, Dawson #4, the holdover fire from 2004 is being estimated at approximately 2800 hectares.  Burning in the remote area of Mt. Osborn, it is approximately seven kilometres from the Yukon/Alaska border. A patrol aircraft is flying to the fire today for evaluation.

Elsewhere, the two Mayo fires have also grown in size.  Mayo #1 is burning at approximately 150 hectares south of Lynx Creek.  Although fire crews were working on the fire last night, due to extreme fire behaviour they had to pull off. WFM is reassessing this fire today to develop a contingency strategy.   Mayo #2 is now estimated at 100 hectares, and is being assessed today.

There were more than 2000 lightning strikes in Yukon yesterday.  Many parts of southern Yukon received precipitation yesterday, including 26.8 millimeters reported at the Whitehorse airport.  Less lightning is in the forecast for today and showers are forecast for northern Yukon.

There have been 26 fires this season burning approximately 3100 hectares.
