Four New Fires Reported in Yukon Thursday

Watson Lake #3, reported by a member of the public, was burning by Two Mile, a group of houses north of Watson Lake, in Wildland Fire Management’s (WFM) critical zone.  WFM responded to the human-caused fire and it has since been declared out.

Mayo #3, a human-caused fire, was reported by a member of the public yesterday afternoon. Burning in the east end of the community of Mayo in WFM’s critical zone, crews provided full response and extinguished the .01 hectare fire.

Carmacks fire #8 was reported burning at 1.5 hectares by Minto Airstrip in WFM’s strategic zone. It is approximately five kilometres west of the Klondike Highway, and is also near a campground.  Yesterday, fire crews surrounded the lightning-caused fire with both the DC6 and Firecat airtanker groups. A crew from Carmacks will be working on the fire again today with helicopter support.

The Dawson district also reported a new fire yesterday.  This lightning-caused fire is burning in WFM’s wilderness zone about five kilometres from the Yukon River.  Estimated at 50 hectares, the fire is not threatening any values.  WFM will continue to monitor it on a regular basis. 

Mayo #1, south of Lynx Creek, is under surveillance.  The fire was showing extreme fire behaviour again yesterday and is now estimated at 5000 hectares.  A protection plan is being developed for values in the area.  There is no immediate threat to any values at this time. 

Dawson fire #4, in the remote area of Mt. Osborn, is estimated at 5000 hectares. This wilderness zone fire is approximately seven kilometres from the Yukon/Alaska border.  It is being monitored at this time.  

In other news, the Hootalinqua Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) responded to a fire in the Pilot Mountain subdivision on June 15 when a major storm went through the area.  The fire which was called in after the lightning hit trees in the yard of a resident in the subdivision. The Hootalinqua VFD extinguished the fire.

The weekend forecast is calling for warm and sunny conditions in southern Yukon on Saturday with thundershowers on Sunday, and slightly cooler, cloudy conditions in central and northern Yukon.

There have been 30 fires this season burning approximately 10,200 hectares.
