Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #19 June 20, 2005 - 3:30 PM Firefighters Respond to New Lightning Fires Firefighters were busy over the weekend with several new lightning fires. The Old Crow district reported their first fire of the season late Friday. Initial attack crews and a helicopter responded to the 70 hectare fire which is burning about nine miles south of the Eagle Plains Lodge. Crews continued working on the fire over the weekend to a 15 hectare spot fire. Two loads of retardant were dropped on the fire and crews are completing a hoseline on it today. The main part of the fire was very quiet over the weekend. The second Old Crow fire, near Moose Lake, was reported on Sunday and is in the wilderness zone at 0.1 hectares. Haines Junction responded Sunday to a lightning-caused fire burning at 0.1 hectares in WFM’s full management zone, five km. south of Haines Junction. The fire, thought to be a holdover fire from lighting in the area several days ago, was off the Haines Highway near the Auriol trailhead. It was extinguished. Dawson fire crews responded to a small fire burning in a slash pile near Sunnydale in West Dawson on Friday This fire is thought to be a holdover fire from 2004. WFM expects to call the fire out today. A 1500 hectare fire that started in Alaska has crossed the border into Yukon and WFM has declared it Dawson #9. It is in the wilderness zone near Indian Grave Mountain, and also south of Dawson #4, the holdover fire in the remote area of Mt. Osborn. Meanwhile, Dawson #4 which started in Yukon has crossed the border into Alaska. The 5000 hectare fire is being monitored by WFM. There are currently no values at risk from either of these fires. Mayo #1, south of Lynx Creek, is estimated at 4000 hectares in WFM’s transitional zone. Fire crews attended to a 50 hectare spot fire to the south of the main fire on the weekend. WFM is developing long-term contingency plans for identified values. There is no immediate threat to any values at this time. Mayo received 2.8 millimetres of rain on Sunday with cooler temperatures forecast for today. Carmacks #8, by the Minto Airstrip in the strategic zone, has been demobilized. Firefighters have been working on the fire which started June 16 and tackled the last smoke yesterday morning. The fire is now declared under control. WFM will continue to monitor the fire.
