Mayo Crews Make Good Progress on Lynx Creek Fire

Wildland Fire Management (WFM) fire crews are making good progress on the Lynx Creek fire that started on June 14.

In WFM’s transitional zone, the 4000 hectare fire developed an 80 hectare spot fire last weekend, and since then crews have been working to contain it.  Their efforts have shown positive results as the spot fire is now being held.

“The fire was showing low activity yesterday,” said Al Beaver, Yukon Duty Officer.  “It also received some rain which has also helped.”

There are more than 20 personnel working on this fire, and it is not threatening any values or advancing any closer to the Elsa minesite.

In other news, Alaska fire fighters have had their hands full with the fire near Ft. Yukon, Alaska, which has doubled in size.  Fire officials said the Sheenjek River fire grew from 23,500 acres early Saturday to 59,000 acres Saturday night by strong winds.  The fire still remains north of the Porcupine River keeping the community out of danger.  Ft. Yukon, a community of about 600, is at the confluence of the Yukon and Porcupine Rivers, 145 miles northeast of Fairbanks.  The Alaska Department of Transportation issued a travel advisory on the Dalton Highway between miles 125 to 135 because of poor visibility from smoke.  Four CL215’s from Quebec were expected to arrive in Fairbanks yesterday to help with the fire.

There have been no new fires in the Yukon in the past 24 hours.  The forecast calls for thundershowers in Mayo and Dawson on Wednesday and slightly cooler and showery conditions on Thursday in the south and central Yukon.

There have been 37 fires this season burning approximately 11,500 hectares.
