Wildfire Bulletin #22

June 28, 2005 - 10:30 AM

Two Fires Reported in Last 24 Hours

Wildland Fire Management (WFM) responded to a one hectare fire in the Watson Lake District yesterday, four kilometers west of the Robert Campbell Highway near Simpson Lake. An initial attack crew from Teslin and a contract crew from Watson Lake fought the fire. The Firecat airtanker group blanketed the fire last evening and crews will continue to secure the perimeter today with helicopter support.

The fire is in WFM’s strategic zone with its nearest values, a campground and traplines, three to five kilometers away. None of these values are at risk.

Dawson’s twelfth fire of the 2005 fire season was reported by a patrol aircraft yesterday.  Burning at 2.5 hectares by Walhalla Creek in WFM’s wilderness zone, the fire is not threatening any values.  WFM will continue to monitor this fire. Dawson #11, Aussie Creek and Dawson #7, Dalglish Creek are also being monitored.

In other news, Mayo #1, the Shanghai Fire, is continuing to burn in the vicinity of Lynx Creek in the transitional zone.  Fire crews put a catguard on the northwest corner of the fire and are bringing in pumps this morning.  The fire did not gain in size yesterday. On other sectors of the fire, crews are continuing work on the southern perimeter of the fire. No values are being threatened by the fire.

In Alaska, the Sheenjek fire is almost 81,000 acres and crews are focusing on keeping the blaze from jumping the Porcupine River. The fire is still eight miles from Fort Yukon, north of Fairbanks.

The US National Weather Service issued a dense smoke advisory Monday for interior villages including Central, Circle Hot Springs and summits on the Steese Highway. The advisory means visibility is limited to a mile or less due to smoke. Travelers going into Alaska should call 1-866 282-7577 for updated highway information.

There have been 43 fires this season burning approximately 60,000 hectares. Eighteen fires are currently active.
