Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #23 June 29, 2005 - 10:00 AM Lightning Sparks New Fires in Dawson District With more than 1400 lightning strikes in the central and southern Yukon over the last two days, there were two new lightning fires reported in the Dawson District yesterday. An Alaskan detection aircraft reported a fire near the Alaska/Yukon border in the area of Moose Creek. The fire, estimated at 300 hectares, is burning in the Wilderness Zone and was assessed last night. There are two mining camps that have been identified in the vicinity of the fire. One is 1.6 km. to the north, and the other is 6.5 km. to the south of the fire. As a precaution, Wildland Fire Management will be deploying site protection to the camp closest to the fire today. There is no immediate threat to any values at this time, and the fire is being monitored. Dawson’s fourteenth fire was reported near French Gulch at one hectare in size. The Haines Junction Initial Attack crew and the Pelly First Nations contract crew responded to the fire along with two helicopters yesterday afternoon. Both the DC-6 and Firecat airtanker groups worked the fire and completely contained it with retardant. Firefighters and helicopters remained on the fire until late into the evening and will be back on the fire today. While there are numerous mining sites down the Bonanza Valley, none of these values are at risk from the fire at this time. WFM is continuing to monitor and assess other Wilderness Zone fires in the Old Crow and Dawson Districts including Dawson #7, Dalglish Creek. The fire, located east of the Dempster Highway, is currently 23,000 hectares and continues to grow in size. In other news, crews have completed a catguard and hoseline on the northwest corner of the Shanghai fire (Mayo #1). The fire, burning in the Transitional Zone by Lynx Creek, has not grown in size for the last two days. No values are being threatened by the fire. Fire crews from Teslin and Watson Lake put out hotspots yesterday on the Simpson Lake fire, (Watson Lake #4) which is in the Strategic Zone. This fire should be called under control later today. Twenty fires are currently active around the Territory. There have been 47 fires this season burning approximately 64,000 hectares. -30- For Yukon Wildfire updates, call 1-800-826-4750 Current Fire Danger Ratings |
