Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #24 June 30, 2005 - 11:00 AM Dempster Highway Re-opens after Temporary Closure from Forest Fire There were no new fires in the past 24 hours, but fire activity picked up yesterday in Northern Yukon. Dawson #7, the Dalglish fire, made a small excursion across the Dempster Highway last night. As a result the Highways and Public Works closed the highway between the Oglivie River and Eagle Plains. The highway was reopened as of 8 a.m. this morning. Forest fire activity on the Dempster south of Eagle Plains may cause traffic delays over the next few days. To get updated highway information, please call 1-877-456-7623. This Wilderness Zone fire is estimated at 47,000 hectares and is burning 30 kilometres south of Eagle Plains and is not threatening any values at this time. Wildland Fire Management (WFM) has been continually monitoring this fire as well as the other fires in the area. Today WFM will send another fixed-wing patrol to assess the fire this morning. In other news, site protection has been done on two mining camps in the vicinity of the Moose Creek fire (Dawson #13) by a fire crew from Old Crow. The closest mining camp is still one kilometre north of the fire and the other mining camp is approximately three to four kilometres south of the fire. The fire is burning west towards the Yukon/Alaska border. There is currently no threat to the values at risk. The fire is approximately 1600 hectares. Fire crews have done an excellent job controlling the French Gulch fire which started June 28, 14 kilometres south of Dawson. WFM attacked this Full Management Zone fire aggressively and as a result it is now fully contained and under control. Mayo #1, the Shanghai fire, showed moderate activity on the northwest corner yesterday. Today fire crews will focus on containing that portion of the fire with hoseline and catguard. This fire is not threatening any values at risk at this time. Fire Danger Ratings will be LOW for those Yukoners and travelers going to the Farrago Music Festival this weekend in Faro. There have been no fires in the Faro/Ross River area so far this fire season. WFM would like to ask the public to continue to be careful with campfires and to make sure they’re fully extinguished before leaving the area. Twenty fires are currently active around the Territory. There have been 47 fires this season burning approximately 90,000 hectares. -30- For Yukon Wildfire updates, call 1-800-826-4750 Current Fire Danger Ratings |
