Mayo District Reports One Fire on Weekend

Wildland Fire Management (WFM) responded to Mayo #9, the Ice Chest Mountain fire, reported by a member of the public Saturday.

The lightning-caused fire is contained at 60 hectares.  Three initial attack crews, two from Mayo and one from Dawson, were sent to fight the fire Saturday.  WFM also sent two airtanker groups to put a retardant line 90% around the fire.  An additional 11 personnel were added later to assist those already working on the fire.

The fire is burning 7.6 kilometres west of a cabin, and it is also 8 kilometres south of the Partridge Creek farms, the Klondike Highway, and powerlines.  None of these values are currently at risk, and the fire is now 60 to 65% contained.  The fire is being reassessed today.

In other news, a mining camp in the area of Dawson #13, the Moose Creek fire, underwent site protection over the weekend.  A sprinkler system was set up on a cabin in the area, and it will continue to run today.  The fire is estimated at 1630 hectares in size and will continue to be monitored.

The forecast calls for a warming, drying trend this week in southern and central Yukon with thundershowers and wet lightning developing Tuesday.

With the increasing fire danger in central and southern Yukon, Wildland Fire Management (WFM) would again like to remind the public to be extra careful with their campfires and never leave them unattended.  Also, permit guidelines must always be followed, and when fire danger ratings rise to HIGH or EXTREME it is important to call your local district office to make sure burning is permitted.

There have been 64 fires this season burning approximately 111,000 hectares. On this date in 2004, there were 184 forest fires that had burnt 799,000 hectares of forest.
