Fire Crews Respond to Fire Near Taku Subdivision

Wildland Fire Management (WFM) responded to a spot fire burning in the Full Management Zone by Tagish Lake near the Taku Subdivision in Tagish yesterday.  The fire was discovered by the Tagish lookout tower in the evening, and was shortly fought by an airtanker, as well as an initial attack crew and helicopter out of Whitehorse.  The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and it should be declared out today.

WFM also took action on a lightning-caused fire in the Carmacks district yesterday.  The 0.1 hectare fire, in the Strategic Zone, was reported by a patrol aircraft by Wood Cutter Ridge.  A crew from Carmacks with a helicopter responded to the fire, and it should be called out this morning.

In other news, the Boundary Creek fire (Dawson #19) in WFM’s Wilderness Zone, will undergo full suppression by Alaskan firefighters.  The fire, burning on both sides of the Yukon/Alaska border, is threatening values in Alaska, but the nearest value on the Yukon side is eight kilometres from the fire and is not at risk.  Alaskan officials are carrying out full suppression as a precaution to the values in Alaska.

With warm weather in the forecast for the next few days, the fire danger is expected to increase in parts of the Territory.  WFM would again like to remind the public to be extra careful with their campfires and follow these simple guidelines: prepare your campfire in an area away from vegetation and other flammable materials; attend to your fire at all times and make sure it is fully extinguished before you leave; keep water and a shovel nearby; never light a fire in dry, windy conditions.

As well, burning permit guidelines must always be followed, and when fire danger ratings rise to HIGH or EXTREME it is important to call your local district office to make sure burning is permitted.

There have been 68 fires this season burning approximately 115,000 hectares.

Wildland Fire Management wishes to thank the public for their continued help in reporting wildfires. To report a wildfire call 1-888-798-FIRE(3473).
