Lightning Sparks New Fires Near Dempster

Lightning activity in central Yukon resulted in several new fires Thursday, all in the Dawson District.  Initial attack crews responded to a Dawson #20, a .5 hectare fire 30 km. up the Dempster Highway. Burning in the Transitional Zone, the fire received several loads of retardant from the DC-6 airtanker group. There are several values within 2.5 km. of the fire which are not being threatened at this time. The fire grew from from .5 to 7.4 hectares and is being fought by a 1x4 First Nation crew and several extra firefighters. Additional crews will be put on the fire today.

A spot fire near Soda Creek was also reported and was burning in WFM’s Full Management Zone. Initial attack crews and a helicopter worked on the fire which is within one mile of an active mining camp along Hunker Rd.  Fire officials expect the fire to be called out later today.

In other news fire crews have mopped up and cold-trailed Mayo #9, the Ice Chest Mountain fire. Mayo #10, another lightning caused fire in the Wilderness Zone, north of the MacMillan River Plateau is being monitored.

With warm weather in the forecast for the next few days, the fire danger is expected to increase in parts of the Territory.  WFM would again like to remind the public to be extra careful with their campfires and follow these simple guidelines: prepare your campfire in an area away from vegetation and other flammable materials; attend to your fire at all times and make sure it is fully extinguished before you leave; keep water and a shovel nearby; never light a fire in dry, windy conditions.

As well, burning permit guidelines must always be followed, and when fire danger ratings rise to HIGH or EXTREME it is important to call your local district office to make sure burning is permitted.

There have been 72 fires this season burning approximately 120,000 hectares.
