Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #34 July 22, 2005 - 11:00 AM One New Fire Reported In Past Week Mayo 11, a 350 hectare fire burning west of Wind River in the Mayo District, was discovered on MODIS, the fire detection satellite this week. The fire is burning in the Wilderness Zone and will assessed when conditions allow. Dawson 13, the Moose Creek fire, has shown increased fire activity this week. This Wilderness Zone fire has been active on the north and northeast portions. The fire is approximately 10,000 hectares. Wildland Fire Management (WFM) will continue to monitor the fire, as well as values in the area. The Alaska Fire Service is planning a burnout operation on the Boundary Creek fire later today. This fire is burning south of Eagle and Eagle Village, Alaska. Travelers going into Alaska may encounter smoky conditions and short traffic delays on the Taylor Highway between mile 140 and 150. The fire has shown no activity on the Yukon side of the border this week and is not threatening any values. In other news, the eight 1×3 initial attack crews that left for Sudbury, Ontario on July 20 through the MARS agreement are now stationed in WaWa, Ontario. The crews are doing initial attack on fires in that area. Yesterday Ontario had 20 new fires, and they are anticipating multiple starts again today. The fire danger rating throughout the Territory is forecasted to be LOW to MODERATE this weekend. For those Yukoners and tourists heading to the Dawson City Music Festival, the fire danger rating there is expected to be MODERATE all weekend. However, with forecasted sunny conditions in Dawson, it is still very important for campers to have caution when using campfires, and to make sure that they are properly extinguished before leaving the area. There have been 75 fires this season burning approximately 130,000 hectares. Wildland Fire Management wishes to thank the public for their continued help in reporting wildfires.
