Wildfire Bulletin #36

Fire Activity in Eagle Plains Area Picks Up

Fire activity on Dawson 7, the Dalglish fire, has increased over the last couple of days.  Thirty kilometres south of Eagle Plains, this Wilderness Zone fire is currently burning parallel to the Dempster Highway. Travelers may encounter smoky conditions and reduced visibility between kilometre 330 and 348. For more information on highways call Highways and Public Works at 1-877-456-7623.

MODIS, the fire detection satellite, showed a new fire last night west of the Dalglish Creek fire, about 50 kilometres south of Eagle Plains.  The fire is burning near the Dempster Highway and may also affect travel due to smoke and reduced visibility.  Wildland Fire Management (WFM) is sending an aircraft to assess the fire this morning.

Other Yukon fires have also displayed increased fire behaviour.  This includes Mayo 11, a fire west of Wind River in the Wilderness Zone, which is actively burning on the southern flank.  WFM is also assessing the fire this morning.  Dawson 13, the Moose Creek fire, is burning in the Wilderness Zone by the Yukon/Alaska border, and has shown increased activity on its northern flank.  This fire will continue to be monitored by WFM.  The three Old Crow fires in the Eagle Plains area are also active, but are burning mostly within their perimeter.  No values are being threatened at this time.

There have been 78 fires this season burning approximately 134,000 hectares.
