Mother Nature Extinguishes New Carmacks Fire

A call from the public alerted Wildland Fire Management (WFM) to a lightning-caused spot fire burning on the side of a hill near the Pelly Farms Road.  A 1×3 Pelly initial attack crew and a birddog were sent to extinguish the fire but found that recent precipitation had done the job for them.  WFM would like to thank the member of the public who reported the fire.

While the Dempster Highway continues to be open, Highways and Public Works advises travelers that there may be reduced visibility between km 320 and km 348.  WFM has sent a representative to regularly monitor the Eagle Plains fires.

To get more information on highways call Highways and Public Works at 1-877-456-7623.  If there are any questions or concerns about the status of the fires near the Dempster Highway in the Eagle Plains area, please call the Eagle Plains Hotel at 1-867-993-2453 and ask to speak to Wildland Fire Management’s representative or leave a detailed message.

The Fire Danger Rating is LOW to MODERATE throughout the Yukon, with cooler conditions and showers forecasted in both south and central Yukon.  As a result of an upper low in the Inuvik area, northern Yukon will be coolest, and will also have showers.

WFM would like to remind those burning brush, grass, or debris to always remember to follow burning permit guidelines.  To obtain a burning permit please call your local fire district office.

FireSmarting personal property is the best way the public can do their part to ensure their homes are not at risk from a potential wildfire.  The FireSmart program is focused on reducing the risk of wildfires around homes and communities.  Please call 867-667-3013 to get more information on FireSmart.
There have been 78 fires this season burning approximately 158,000 hectares.
