Whitehorse Crews Respond to Abandoned Campfire

A call from the public alerted Wildland Fire Management (WFM) to a fire south of Whitehorse Wednesday night. Whitehorse District fire crews responded to an abandoned campfire late last evening near Venus Place, about 150 metres off the Alaska Highway. Crews extinguished the small surface fire and have gone out to the area again today to ensure that it is completely cold. WFM would like to thank the member of the public who reported the fire.

Meanwhile, the Yukon firefighters who went to Ontario on July 20 to assist with forest fires there returned home yesterday. The fire danger remains high in parts of Ontario and fire officials are expecting new fire starts with over 25,000 lightning strikes during the 32 hours.

Although the Fire Danger Rating is low throughout the Yukon, Wildland Fire Management is reminding the public to exercise caution with campfires and to make sure they are completely extinguished before leaving the area. Saturate it with water and stir until the fire is completely cold to the touch.

WFM would like to remind those burning brush, grass, or debris to always remember to follow burning permit guidelines.  To obtain a burning permit please call your local fire district office.

FireSmarting personal property is the best way the public can do their part to ensure their homes are not at risk from a potential wildfire.  The FireSmart program is focused on reducing the risk of wildfires around homes and communities.  Please call 867-667-3013 to get more information on FireSmart.

There have been 79 fires this season burning approximately 175,000 hectares.
