Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #43 August 10, 2005 - 10:00 AM Fire Danger Rating Exptected to Increase As Discovery Day Weekend Approaches While fire activity has been low in the past week, warm temperatures are expected to extend throughout the Discovery Day weekend. Wildland Fire Management (WFM) is asking the public to use caution when burning and to be careful with their campfires over the holiday weekend. In these conditions, fires will start easily and spread quickly. Of particular concern is the Haines Junction area where Fire Danger Ratings are expected to range from HIGH to EXTREME. WFM personnel will be routinely checking campgrounds this weekend for campfires that have not been properly extinguished. Fire Danger Ratings may also be similar in the Beaver Creek and Dawson areas. In other news, the last night the Faro Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) extinguished an unattended brush fire that, due to increased winds, spread embers to a nearby dry, mossy area. Burning in the town of Faro, the 0.1 hectare fire was soon declared out. WFM would like to thank the member of the public who reported the fire. Travellers on the Taylor Highway in Alaska can expect delays and heavy smoke from forest fire activity on the Boundary Creek fire between mile post 125 and 142. Please proceed with caution and keep headlights on, watching out for crews and fire equipment. There have been 80 fires this season burning approximately 175,000 hectares. Wildland Fire Management wishes to thank the public for their continued help in reporting wildfires.
