Wildfire Bulletin #45

Human-Caused Fires of Most Concern during Holiday Weekend

Wildland Fire Management (WFM) is continuing to ask campers to be very cautious with their campfires over the Discovery Day long weekend.  With few lightning strikes expected during this time, human-caused fires are of most concern, and with the forecasted conditions it is very easy for unattended campfires to spread quickly.

“Temperatures will be a little cooler over the weekend than they have been the past few days,” said Meteorologist Don Green.  “However, we will still see as high as 28 degrees in central Yukon and across most of the Territory it will be sunny.”

Parks Canada is also asking those traveling to the Kluane region of the Territory to take extra caution with campfires, as Fire Danger Ratings in that area are expected to reach HIGH to EXTREME, and winds are also expected to be high.

The Dawson and Beaver Creek areas may be experiencing smoky conditions from both Yukon and Alaska fires.  With increased activity on the west and northern flanks, the Moose Creek fire, Dawson 13, was patrolled yesterday but due to heavy smoke there was limited visibility on the fire.  Returning later by vehicle, crews set up site protection on sites on the Canadian portion of the fire, although there is no threat to any values from the fire at this time.  As well, Alaska’s Boundary Creek fire is continuing to be quite active, and Alaska fire crews are working on the portion near the Taylor Highway. To get more information on the Taylor Highway call 511 within the state of Alaska.

Meanwhile, nine Yukon 1×3 initial attack crews are still actively fighting fires in Ontario.  The crews have been battling several Ontario fires for the past three to four days. Ontario continues to experience hot conditions, and there have been 49 new fires in the past 24 hours.  Yukon crews will continue to assist firefighting efforts in Ontario for another nine days.

There have been 79 fires this season burning approximately 175,000 hectares.

Wildland Fire Management wishes to thank the public for their continued help in reporting wildfires. To report a wildfire call 1-888-798-FIRE(3473).
