Wildfire Bulletin #48

August 17, 2005 - 10:00 AM

Smoke Expected to Dissipate Around Dawson

While visibility is currently poor over Beaver Creek, Dawson and Mayo, this afternoon conditions are expected to improve.  Cooler, showery conditions are forecast for central Yukon tomorrow, including Dawson, and should clear out some of the smoke.

Many parts of the Yukon have been experiencing smoky conditions over the last few days from increased forest fire activity, mostly in Alaska.  Fire Danger Ratings are currently LOW to MODERATE, dropping from HIGH to MODERATE earlier this week.

The best time to travel is during periods of low fire activity, which is usually early in the morning.  For highway information please call Highways and Public Works at 1-877-456-7623.  To learn more about the smoke in the Yukon please visit the Environment Canada website.

There have been 81 fires this season burning approximately 175,000 hectares.

Wildland Fire Management wishes to thank the public for their continued help in reporting wildfires. To report a wildfire call 1-888-798-FIRE(3473).
