Wildfire Bulletin #49

August 19, 2005 - 10:00 AM

Smoke Clears in Dawson

After several days of poor ventilation and visibility, the smoke is finally clearing out of Dawson.  The current visibility is about 20 miles. Many parts of the Yukon, particularly the Dawson area, have been experiencing smoky conditions over the last few days from forest fire activity, mostly in Alaska.

While the haze is clearing in Dawson, other parts of the territory are seeing smoke drift in from Alaska forest fires.  Burwash, Haines Junction and Beaver Creek are reporting heavy smoke this morning.

In other news, the nine fire fighting crews and agency representative that were deployed to assist with fires in Ontario earlier this month, are returning to the Yukon later this evening.

Fire Danger Ratings are currently LOW across the Territory. The forecast for the weekend is calling for a few showers over northern and southern Yukon tonight and sunny conditions in central Yukon on Saturday. Sunday will see cloudy conditions with showers and slightly warmer temperatures.

While there have been no new fires in the Territory in the last few days because of cooler conditions, Wildland Fire Management reminds the public to continue to be careful with campfires and to never leave them unattended.
There have been 81 fires this season burning approximately 175,000 hectares.

Wildland Fire Management wishes to thank the public for their continued help in reporting wildfires. If you see a wildfire, please call 1-888-798-FIRE(3473).
