Wildfire Bulletin #50

August 19, 2005 - 4:00 PM

Smoke Coming from Alaska

Much of the western Yukon is experiencing smoky conditions today. Whitehorse, Beaver Creek, Burwash, and Haines Junction are all reporting heavy smoke. While fire activity is low in the Yukon, there are a number of large fires in Alaska that are still quite active and causing smoke to drift into the Yukon.

For travelers heading to Dawson, the latest weather reports clear skies with a light haze.

Fire Danger Ratings are currently LOW across the Territory. The forecast for the weekend is calling for a few showers over northern and southern Yukon tonight and sunny conditions in central Yukon on Saturday. Sunday will see cloudy conditions with showers and slightly warmer temperatures.

While there have been no new fires in the Territory in the last few days because of cooler conditions, Wildland Fire Management reminds the public to continue to be careful with campfires and to never leave them unattended.

There have been 81 fires this season burning approximately 175,000 hectares.

Wildland Fire Management wishes to thank the public for their continued help in reporting wildfires. If you see a wildfire, please call 1-888-798-FIRE(3473).
