Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #51 August 24, 2005 - 10:00 AM Dempster Highway Reopens after Temporary Closure from Forest Fire As a result of forest fire activity, the Dempster Highway was temporarily closed south of Eagle Plains last evening, but has since reopened. Travelers may encounter smoky conditions and reduced visibility between km198 (the Ogilvie River) through to km 365 (Eagle Plains). Due to changing conditions, the Department of Highways and Public Works is advising travelers to be prepared for possible delays. Wildland Fire Management (WFM) is sending a representative to monitor fire activity in the Eagle Plains area over the next days. Dawson 7, the Dalglish fire, has been burning by the Dempster Highway creating heavy smoke south of Eagle Plains. The best time to travel on the Dempster Highway is in the morning when fire activity is low. For current information on highway conditions call Highways and Public Works at 1-877-456-7623. Elsewhere, the Moose Creek fire, burning near the Alaska border is creating heavy smoke on the Top of the World Highway at approximately km. 90 in the area near the Little Gold Customs station. The fire is also active on the Alaska side. Travelers should drive with caution and with headlights on at all times. There have been 81 fires this season burning approximately 175,000 hectares.
