Firefighters Respond to Fire in Pilot Mtn. Subdivision

Whitehorse District firefighters responded to a .1 hectare fire yesterday in the Pilot Mountain Subdivision. The human caused fire was reported by the Haeckel Tower Wednesday afternoon. The fire was quickly extinguished and RCMP are investigating.

Travelers on the Dempster Highway may encounter smoky conditions and reduced visibility from forest fire activity between km 198 (the Ogilvie River) through to km 365 (Eagle Plains). The 85,000 hectare Wilderness Zone fire has been burning by the Dempster Highway creating heavy smoke south of Eagle Plains.

Elsewhere, the Moose Creek fire, burning near the Alaska border is creating heavy smoke on the Top of the World Highway at approximately km. 90 in the area near the Little Gold Customs station. The fire is also active on the Alaska side. Travelers should drive with caution and with headlights on at all times.

There have been 82 fires this season burning approximately 175,000 hectares.
