Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #37 July 08, 2004 - 4:00 PM Mendenhall Fire Caused By Lightning The recent fire by Mendenhall was determined to have been caused by lightning. It has been determined that it was a holdover fire from June 28 when there were a number of lightning strikes in that area. The forecasted weather forecast is calling for warmer throughout the territory for the rest of the week. An upper ridge, which is the cause of the warm weather, is expected to arrive next Tuesday or Wednesday and is predicted for approximately five days. Winds should be light and lightning is not probable until the ridge moves past the Yukon into the Northwest Territories. Temperatures are forecasted in the high 20's. It will be sunny all over the Yukon.
Advisories Although the fire ban has been modified in some areas, Wildland Fire Management is asking the public to continue to be extremely careful when camping with fires. There is an information center set up at Robert Service School in Dawson for fire information. There is also a fire briefing on Dawson's local channel 11 at 9 p.m., taped in the ancillary room of Robert Service School, which will last approximately 20 minutes nightly. This briefing will discuss not only fire but weather issues, emergency measures, fire control and more if applicable. People are also invited to come to the briefing at the Robert Service School. There have been 176 fires in the Yukon burning over 582, 000 hectares of forest.
