Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #38 July 09, 2004 - 9:00 AM Dominion Fire Closes Road The Dominion fire was active along the North Klondike Highway and is burning on both sides of the highway. Due to fires and smoke conditions the highway was closed in the Flat Creek area periodically overnight. For the next few days, travelers should try to pass through kilometers 626 and 675 (Dempster corner) on the Klondike Highway, which is from Gravel Lake to Flat Creek, between 5 a.m. and 11 a.m. Delays during that period are expected to be much less difficult than any other time. After 11 a.m., expect extended delays. Overnight delays are also possible. For more information call Highways and Public Works at 867-667-3710 or 1-877-456-7623.
Advisories The North Klondike Highway is now open, but may close again on short notice. As well, the Robert Campbell Highway is now open, though the situation on that highway can also change on short notice. Travelers are urged to phone the Yukon Road Report for current updates at 867-667-3710 or 1-877-456-7623 before traveling. There is an information center set up at Robert Service School in Dawson for fire information. There is also a fire briefing on Dawson's local channel 11 at 9 p.m., taped in the ancillary room of Robert Service School nightly. This briefing will discuss not only fire but weather issues, emergency measures, fire control and more if applicable. People are also invited to come to the briefing at the Robert Service School. There is expected to be an upper ridge entering the Yukon next week that will bring in warm weather. The temperatures are expected to reach high 20's by mid-week. These conditions are expected to increase fire activity. Although the fire ban has been modified in some areas, Wildland Fire Management is asking the public to continue to be extremely careful when camping with fires. There have been 182 fires in the Yukon burning over 599, 000 hectares of forest. -30- For Yukon Wildfire updates, call 1-800-826-4750 Current Fire Danger Ratings |
