Good Progress Made On Some Dawson Fires

Fire crews are making good progress on the Goldfields fires.

Yesterday the crews continued to work on the Dempster fire which was spreading south towards values. A burnout on the south end of the fire commenced at 3 p.m. Friday.

The French Gulch fire was also active yesterday, becoming an intermittent crown fire at times. Cloud cover reduced the fires intensity. There was little spread, and the fire is 60% contained.

There were three burnouts completed along the North and South Klondike Highway concerning the Dominion fire. Crews will be actioning any hotspots along the highway strip today. There is a burnout planned again tomorrow along the west flank of the fire.

The Haystack fire is also continuing to be active. There will be site protection for a value at the Indian River today.

Yukon Fires Being Actioned
Goldfields Complex DA #9,10, 12, 21,30, 37 over 142,000 hectares Dempster(30): Smoke will be in the area for the next few days. Crews are continuing to be successful on the west and south flanks of the fire. There is expected growth in the east. Dominion(10): Air tankers actioning west flank of fire. Expected growth on east flank. Firefighting activities may result in temporary closures of the highway. French Gulch(21): Crews are planning to conduct a burnout on its northeast corner. Haystack(09): Crews are planning to conduct a burnout at Ruby Mountain.
Frances Lake WL#17 approx. 25,000 hectares

Crews are focused on site protection. Fire has shown almost no activity around Robert Campbell Highway.

Tom Lake near Sa Dena Hess mine site WL#26 4,400 hectares Good progress being made on section of fire closest to mine site. Crews with helicopter bucket supported the fire yesterday.
BC Fires
Coal Creek BC Fire #232 27,700 hectares Fire is in mop up and patrol status
Swan Lake BC Fire #86 32,000 hectares Work is continuing on consolidating burnout area and mopping up. Fire is still active.

Advisories

The North Klondike Highway is now open, but may close again on short notice. As well, the Robert Campbell Highway is now open, though the situation on that highway can also change on short notice. Travelers are urged to phone the Yukon Road Report for current updates at 867-667-3710 or 1-877-456-7623 before traveling.

There is an information center set up at Robert Service School in Dawson for fire information. There is also a fire briefing on Dawson's local channel 11 at 9 p.m., taped in the ancillary room of Robert Service School nightly. This briefing will discuss not only fire but weather issues, emergency measures, fire control and more if applicable. People are also invited to come to the briefing at the Robert Service School.

There have been 182 fires in the Yukon burning over 838, 000 hectares of forest, and 157 of those fires are currently active.
