Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #41 July 11, 2004 - 1:00 PM Increased Activity Yesterday On Woodburn Creek Fire The Mayo #09 fire at Woodburn Creek was active yesterday and made a four kilometre run. Winds gusting from 27 to 55 kilometre per hour pushed the fire to the southeast towards Hotsprings Creek. Air tankers from Whitehorse were deployed this morning to action that part of the fire. Other fire crews are continuing work on securing the west flank of the fire, which was estimated at 30,000 hectares before its run yesterday. Meanwhile, a fire was reported up the Homan River adjacent to the Chilkoot Trail National Historic site on July 10 by employees of White Pass working near Bennett. The fire is near Homan Lake in the Homan River drainage approximately eight kilometers northwest of the site boundary in B.C. The fire was actioned by a fire suppression crew from Kluane National Park and two helicopters. Air tankers from Whitehorse provided air support with a retardant drop. The fire is approximately two hectares in size and is being held. In other news, there are thirty new firefighters arriving in the territory tonight from Alberta. The crews will be deployed to the Goldfields Complex and Carmacks as five Ontario crews have been released and are returning home. The rest of the Ontario crews are leaving Wednesday. There were no new fires in the past 24 hours. Yesterday was the first time in 25 days that no new fires were reported.
Advisories The British Columbia fires, Coal River and Swan Lake, are being monitored as B.C fire crews have met their objectives on both fires. Travelers are urged to phone the Yukon Road Report for current updates at 867-667-3710 or 1-877-456-7623 before traveling. There is an information center set up at Robert Service School in Dawson for fire information. There is also a fire briefing on Dawson's local channel 11 at 8 p.m., taped in the ancillary room of Robert Service School nightly. This briefing will discuss not only fire but weather issues, emergency measures, fire control and more if applicable.
