Fire Ban Reinforced

Wildland Fire Management (WFM) would like to remind the public that the fire ban is still in effect.

The current fire ban has been modified for southern Yukon and the far north, but WFM stresses that campfire use continues to only apply to commercial and government campgrounds. The ban continues to allow no burning on any sites for the remainder of the Yukon.

Although areas of the Yukon have received rain showers over the past few days and the forest appears to be wet, the forest floor is still drier than it appears.

As encouraged to do so by WFM, the public has continued to report suspicious smoke. Smoke from fires out of commercial and government campgrounds is often reported, and consequently fire crews must investigate. If the current ban is obeyed steadily, fire crews would be able to focus more solely on active fires, as opposed to those fires which could unnecessarily become out of control.

The ban is still in effect in part due to the forecast which fire officials are anticipating to be warm and dry. As expected, the weather has already begun to heat up in areas across the Yukon.

Wildland Fire Management would like to thank Yukoners and visitors for their cooperation in abiding by this ban
