Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #50 July 16, 2004 - 1:00 PM Goldfields Team Changeover Dawson residents can expect some changes over the next few days, as the public face of the Goldfields team changes over. The Ontario Incident Management Team is winding down its 19-day stint, and a Saskatchewan team is ramping up. The two teams will work side-by-side for the next two days to ensure a seamless turnover. After receiving briefings last night, the Saskatchewan team will now shadow the Ontario team today before taking over. With thick smoke once again, crews continued to take direct attack action against three of the major fires within the complex. French Gulch, Dominion and Dempster were all actioned with heavy equipment and manpower throughout the day. Despite moderate fire activity over the past few days in many parts of the Yukon, a change in the weather will likely bring more extreme fire activity. Residents and visitors are reminded that the risks associated with forest fires are still present. Because of the continuing warm dry weather Wildland Fire Management would like to remind the public that no open fires are allowed in the territory. Although the current fire ban has been modified for southern Yukon and the far north, burning fires in this area only applies in commercial and government campgrounds. For more information on the current fire ban please call 867-456-3845.
Advisories Travelers are advised to drive along the Klondike Highway between 4 a.m. and noon, as those are slow burning periods. Pilot cars are in place, if required. Travelers are urged to phone the Yukon Road Report for current updates at 867-667-3710 or 1-877-456-7623 before traveling. Any residents in the Yukon concerned about smoke are encouraged to call their local nursing station or hospital. Smoke is now lifting in many areas of the Yukon. Although the current fire ban has been modified for southern Yukon and the far north, Wildland Fire Management would like to remind people that burning fires only applies in commercial and government campgrounds. The forest floor is drier than it appears. Also, smoke from fires outside of commercial and government campgrounds is often reported, and consequently fire crews must go out and investigate. There have been 194 fires in the Yukon burning over 1,200, 000 hectares of forest. There are currently 164 active fires. -30- For Yukon Wildfire updates, call 1-800-826-4750 Current Fire Danger Ratings |
