Two Hectare Whitehorse Fire Fought

Wildland Fire Management (WFM) responded quickly to a public call from the Lewes Lake subdivision yesterday afternoon, reporting a fire in the area.

The fire was found to be two hectares in size between the subdivision and the Carcross Road in WFM's critical zone, an area of highest priority when fighting fires and the zone with the greatest number of values.

Air tanker groups were dispatched from Whitehorse, Watson Lake and Dawson to fight the fire. The Mount Lorne, Carcross and Golden Horne Volunteer Fire Department's also battled the fire. The air tanker group enroute to day-base in Carmacks was called back to fight the Lewes Lake fire. There were also helicopters, pumper trucks, water trucks, and YTG ground crews working on the fire.

Initially the fire was showing aggressive fire behavior and was burning north of an old burn from 1992. It was burning away from the Lewes Lake subdivision.

Air tankers totally ringed the fire with retardant. Fire crews worked late into the evening and the fire was 'being held' at 2.5 hectares. Crews will be doing mop up this afternoon and likely to be off the fire by tonight.

Advisories

Travelers are also advised to drive along the Klondike Highway between 4 a.m. and noon, as those are slow burning periods. Pilot cars are in place, if required. For more information on highways, call Highways and Public Works at 1-877-456-7623 or 867-667-3710.

Any residents in the Yukon concerned about smoke are encouraged to call their local nursing station or hospital. Smoke is now lifting in many areas of the Yukon.

Although the current fire ban has been modified for southern Yukon and the far north, Wildland Fire Management would like to remind people that burning fires only applies in commercial and government campgrounds. The forest floor is drier than it appears. Also, smoke from fires outside of commercial and government campgrounds is often reported, and consequently fire crews must go out and investigate.

There have been 206 fires in the Yukon burning over 1,257, 000 hectares of forest. There are currently 173 active fires.
