Fire Alert Status Removed From Goldfields, Klondike Fire Centre Reassumes Command of Goldfields

The fire alerts have been removed from the Klondike Goldfields Complex.

Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) and Wildland Fire Management (WFM) in Whitehorse and Dawson jointly made the decision to lift the alerts, effective 8 a.m. on Wednesday, July 28.

The two-hour and four-hour alerts for the goldfields area south of the Indian River and north of the goldfields have been in place since July 10, 2004, and were implemented based on the fire behavior and forecasted fire behavior at the time.

As well, effective July 29, the Klondike Fire Centre will assume command for all fires in the Klondike Zone, including the Goldfields Complex fires.

There are still 36 active fires in the Klondike Zone, though fire officials expect that fire activity will remain at a low intensity. The fires are not considered a threat to life, personal property, or the community at this time.

With the changeover, the Incident Management Team will no longer be located in the Robert Service School. Fire fighting efforts in the Zone will be based out of the Klondike Fire Centre, located at the Dawson Airport.

Klondike fire information is now available at the Klondike Fire Zone at 867-993-5992, or by calling 867-456-3956, or toll free 1-800-826-4750.
