Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #69 August 12, 2004 - 11:30 AM Beaver Creek and Ross River Report New Fires There were two fires reported yesterday, both caused by lightning and one of them fought by Wildland Fire Management (WFM). The pilot of a patrol plane flying in the Beaver Creek district spotted a fire located five kilometers east of Snag on Wednesday night. The fire, estimated at sixteen hectares, is in the vicinity of a historical site and was actioned by an air tanker, a helicopter and an initial attack crew. Crews will be back on the fire today. The Ross River district also received a new fire east of Stokes Lake. The fire is burning 200 hectares in WFM's wilderness zone. This fire will continue to be regularly monitored. The record for the number of fires in one season over the last 50 years, set in 1994, has been surpassed. Yukon has now had 256 fires. The old record was 255. With the weather forecast showing continuing warm and dry conditions there is still a risk of new fires and increased fire activity on existing fires. WFM is monitoring fire activity with increased patrols and enhanced preparedness levels for initial attack in the event of new starts. Advisories Wildland Fire Management is advising Yukoners and travelers that they may see smoke from increased fire activity throughout the territory. WFM reminds Yukoners and visitors that extreme caution should be used while camping with fires. Campfires must never be left unattended. Yukoners are also reminded that burning permits are required for the burning of brush and debris and will only be issued if conditions allow. Please contact your local district office for burning restrictions. There have been 256 fires in the Yukon burning approximately 1,700, 000 hectares of forest. -30- For Yukon Wildfire updates, call 1-800-826-4750 Current Fire Danger Ratings |
