Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #72 August 19, 2004 - 9:30 PM Fire in Haines Junction District Wildland Fire Management (WFM) is actioning a fire in the Haines Junction district with an initial attack crew. The fire was reported this morning and found to be approximately 0.1 hectares by Jarvis Creek. The fire is also near the Alaska Highway. "This is the eighth fire in the Haines Junction district this season," said Mike Sparks, Yukon Duty Officer. "Although conditions have changed somewhat since June and July, our crews are continuing to expect new starts. Our preparedness levels are still high." There have been 718 lightning strikes in the territory since last night and lightning is expected to continue today and tomorrow. Temperatures are still well above normal throughout most of the territory. Advisories WFM is asking the public to be extra cautious with campfires and to ensure that they are completely extinguished. Campfires must never be left unattended. Yukoners are also reminded that burning permits are required for the burning of brush and debris and will only be issued if conditions allow, and it is asked that persons contact their local district office for burning restrictions before burning.
