Wildfire Bulletin #76

August 27, 2004 - 9:30 AM

One New Fire Reported in Beaver Creek District

Later yesterday afternoon a fire near the White River in the Beaver Creek District was reported. The lightning caused fire is in the wilderness zone and is .06 hectares in size.

In other fire news, the Fire Cat air tanker group was released back to British Columbia yesterday as the Yukon fire season is beginning to wind down. Cooler, more seasonal conditions are being experienced throughout most of the territory approaching the end of August.

Elsewhere, the Gardner Creek fire across the border in Alaska, north of US customs spotted across the Alaska Highway at around 9:00 p.m. last night, creating very smoky conditions, consequently closing the road between milepost 1252 and 1246. About 100 vehicles were affected. The Alaska Highway has re-opened but travelers are advised that smoky conditions from forest fire activity may affect visibility. Advisories

WFM is asking the public to be extra cautious with campfires and to ensure that they are completely extinguished. Campfires must never be left unattended.

Yukoners are also reminded that burning permits are required for the burning of brush and debris and will only be issued if conditions allow, and it is asked that persons contact their local district office for burning restrictions before burning.

For more information on the current fire situation call Wildland Fire Management at 1-867-456-3845.
