Wildfire Bulletin #77

2004 Fire Season Coming to a Close

There have been 273 fires in the Yukon this year, burning approximately 15,000sq. kilometers of forest.

The majority of fires have been in the Wilderness Zone and most of the fires were caused by lightning. This year, the number of human caused fires was in the low twenties.

The Yukon experienced abnormally hot and dry conditions throughout most of the summer as well as having an active lightning ignition season.

As a result of extreme fire indices throughout most of the Yukon, a territory-wide fire ban was put in place in June which was unprecented in the Yukon. It was only in late July that the fire ban was rescinded.

In a fifty year Yukon fire summary, 1994 was the most active year for fires in the Yukon with a total of 255 fires. That is until this year, where the territory has had 273 fires. In 1958, the area burned was over 891,000 hectares. In 2004, it is estimated that the approximate area burned is close to 1.8 million hectares.

Advisories

Yukoners are reminded that burning permits are required for the burning of brush and debris and will only be issued if conditions allow, and it is asked that persons contact their local district office for burning restrictions before burning.
