FIRST FIRE OF THE 2003 SEASON IN THE KLONDIKE DISTRICT

WHITEHORSE - Yukon Wildland Fire Management and Natural Resources Officers are continuing to monitor a 10-hectare fire burning in the West Dawson area of Dawson City. The fire began Monday evening and was responded to by personnel and a helicopter equipped with a bucket. A local resident reported the fire by calling the wildfire reporting line.

"It's reassuring that members of the public are aware and using the wildfire reporting line," said Yukon Fire Management Duty Officer Gordon Dumas. "The public's involvement in reporting fires is extremely helpful with our suppression efforts and key to a successful fire season."

Three initial attack firefighters worked on the fire into the evening Tuesday along with a skidder and a water truck. On Wednesday afternoon, two Natural Resource Officers were on hand to help the firefighters check for hot spots.

"By Tuesday evening there was no visible smoke," said Dumas. "Once we complete the mop-up procedures, I expect the fire will be called out this afternoon."

The fire is the first of the season within the Klondike District and fourth throughout the territory.
