Wildfire Bulletin #6

Despite Extreme Conditions Just Two Fires Reported

Officials with Yukon Wildland Fire Management are praising the public following a weekend that saw minimal fire activity despite extreme conditions throughout much of the territory.

“The public is to be thanked for their diligence,” said Yukon Duty Officer Lorne Harris. “We saw temperatures more than 10 degrees above normal combined with heavy wind gusts and very dry conditions so the recipe for increased fire activity was definitely there.”

Two small fires were reported over the weekend in the Haines Junction and Whitehorse fire districts respectively. Both fires were less than a hectare in size and have now been extinguished.

On Friday afternoon in the Haines Junction area a fire was detected along the Old Alaska Highway approximately four kilometres north east of town. Four firefighters responded to the human-caused fire and it was quickly extinguished. On Sunday evening a small fire was detected at the Tagish Dump shortly after 6 PM. Fortunately, firefighters were able to quickly contain and then extinguish the half-hectare fire.

With the two weekend fires there have now been 11 fires in the territory this season burning close to six hectares. The public is reminded to remain vigilant when burning and that a burning permit is required to burn grass, brush or debris in the territory between April 1 and September 30. Permits will be suspended when the fire danger rating is above the low level.

Wildland Fire Management would like to thank the public for their continued cooperation in reporting wildfires. If you see a wildfire please call 1-888-798-FIRE (3473).
