TWO SPOT SIZE FIRES REPORTED OVER THE WEEKEND

WHITEHORSE - Yukon Wildland Fire Management personnel and volunteer fire departments responded to two spot size (less than one hectare) fires over the weekend. Both fires, located in the Kluane and Tintina fire districts began Saturday evening and have since been extinguished.

"In both incidents the volunteer fire departments were the first on the scene," said Yukon Fire Management Duty Officer Gordon Dumas. "It is common throughout the fire season for volunteer fire departments to provide support."

The Kluane district fire was located near Destruction Bay in an area used for winter brush pile burning. The fire started from the 40 kilometer plus weekend wind that re-ignited a smoldering pile. Four Haines Junction initial attack crewmembers were dispatched to the fire by truck and helicopter.

Two Wildland Fire Management personnel responded to the Tintina district fire located near Upper Liard, 15 kilometers west of Watson Lake. The fire was human caused.

Over 50 percent of all fires in the Yukon are a result of human carelessness. The public is urged to exercise caution, to follow Yukon burning restrictions, and to obtain the necessary permits before doing any type of burning.

A total of seven fires have burned just over 11 hectares in the Yukon so far this fire season. At this time last year six fires had burned 14.42 hectares.
