SMOKE AND POSSIBLE FLAMES VISIBLE

WHITEHORSE – Yukon Wildland Fire Management officials are advising those traveling along the Dempster Highway, to be prepared to see smoke and possibly open flames near mile 150.

The smoke is from a forest fire that was first reported Wednesday afternoon. The fire was caused by lightning and is currently approximately 200 hectares in size.

"The movement of this fire depends on the winds," said Duty Officer Mike Sparks. "Right now, the forecast winds should be blowing the fire away from the highway. However, wind patterns can change hourly."

There are currently no resources on the fire as it is burning in a remote area with no identified values at risk. However, fire officials are closely monitoring the fire. Travelers of that portion of the Dempster Highway can expect to see smoke and possibly flames for the next few days.

So far this season there have been 63 forest fires in the territory that have burned over 6800 hectares of forest. Of the 63 fires this season, 29 have been reported by the public. If you notice a forest fire, please report it immediately by calling 1-888-798-FIRE (3473).
