Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #33 July 28, 2003 - 9:30 AM RAIN AIDS WITH DEMPSTER HIGHWAY FIRE WHITEHORSE - Yukon Wildland Fire Management firefighters worked on a fire burning near Mile 150 of the Dempster Highway on the weekend. The fire avoided three cabins in the area. "Our crews put out a couple of spot-fires from that fire, and the cabins are in not in any immediate danger from the fire," said Yukon Duty Officer Mike Sparks. "Old Crow got 16.5 millimetres of rain yesterday, so the fires there are going to be quiet today." In addition, firecrews extinguished the fire burning near Indian River, 25 kilometres south of Dawson City, and crews have left the area. Currently, there are 19 active fires in the territory. All are burning in remote areas and fire officials continue to carefully monitor them. No new fires were reported in the Yukon over the weekend. The smoke that lies over much of the territory today is driftsmoke from fires burning in Alaska and the Northwest Territories. Sparks said that with the rain forecasted for much of the territory, the fire danger rating is expected to drop throughout the Yukon this week. Yukon's crew of three Firecat Airtankers will be heading to Alberta tomorrow morning to help with fire suppression in the province. "If the need arises, we can call them back within 24 hours," said Sparks. Meanwhile, the crew of 20 Yukon firefighters is still working on a fire burning near Chilko Lake by Williams Lake in British Columbia. The DC-6 airtanker is at present stationed in Prince George and Yukon's Air Attack Officer Lorne Harris is working in Penticton, B.C., with a crew of CL-415 water-skimmer aircraft. The 65 fires in Yukon this season have burned over 7,600 hectares of forest. Please be on the lookout for smoke, and if you see suspicious smoke or a forest fire, please call the toll-free wildfire reporting line at 1-888-798-FIRE (3473). -30- For Yukon Wildfire updates, call 1-800-826-4750 Current Fire Danger Ratings |
