Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #36 August 11, 2003 - 9:45 AM THREE REMOTE DAWSON FIRES ACTIVE WHITEHORSE - Three fires, originally reported in the Dawson fire district approximately three weeks ago, are once again active. All three fires are located in observation zones, near Preacher Creek, Mt. Tyrell and Ladue River. "The recent weather patterns in the Dawson area have caused these fires to flare up," said Duty Officer Mike Sparks. "When fires are located in observation zones limited action is normally taken. However, we always monitor them closely." The Preacher Creek fire, originally reported July 21, is located approximately 110 kilometres south of Dawson City and is now estimated to be 1125 hectares in size. The fire near Mt. Tyrell, also reported July 21, is 50 kilometres southwest of Dawson City and is approximately 1600 hectares. The Ladue River fire, first reported July 24, is burning 60 kilometres west of Dawson City and has not been resized yet. All three fires were caused by lightning. Today a helicopter and a Forest Officer will be flying the fire areas to reassess the situation and evaluate the danger these fires might poser to cabins in the area. An airtanker group has also been relocated to the Dawson airport. These fires, combined with fire activity from Alaska and the current weather patterns is the cause of the driftsmoke lying over most of the territory. Officials expect the haze to remain for at least the next few days. With the recent activity, the fire totals in Yukon have now changed. So far this season 66 fires have burned over 30,000 hectares of forest. Last year at this time 67 fires had burned just over 37,000 hectares of forest. -30- For Yukon Wildfire updates, call 1-800-826-4750 Current Fire Danger Ratings |
