Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #37 August 12, 2003 - 9:30 AM TWO NEW FIRES AND SMOKE IN THE AIR WHITEHORSE – Yukon Wildland Fire Management firefighters responded to two new fires yesterday. The firecats dropped retardant on a fire burning at the base of Rose Mountain, about 14 kilometres from Faro. "Firecrews will continue to work on this fire today," said Yukon Duty Officer Al Beaver, adding that the cause of the fire is under investigation. A lightning-caused 150 hectare fire was also reported near the Ladue River on the Alaska/Yukon border yesterday afternoon. Beaver said this fire is burning in a wilderness area on both sides of the border, and no identified human values are at risk. Fire officials monitor the fire. Yesterday, fire officials inspected the three lightning-caused fires that have become active again near Mt. Tyrell, Ladue River and Preacher Creek in the Dawson District. All these fires were reported in July, and have recently flared up again. The Preacher Creek fire is located approximately 110 kilometres south of Dawson City; the Mt. Tyrell fire is 50 kilometres southwest of Dawson City; and the Ladue River fire burns about 60 kilometres west of Dawson City. "None of these fires pose any immediate threat to identified human values," said Beaver. "There are a couple of small cabins near the Mt. Tyrell fire, and we are formulating a plan in case the fire changes its course." Yukoners can continue to expect to see smoke from these fires, as well as driftsmoke from fires burning in Alaska today and for the next few days. -30- For Yukon Wildfire updates, call 1-800-826-4750 Current Fire Danger Ratings |
