Campfire Safety Urged This Weekend

With the fire danger rating currently high to extreme in the Kluane fire district and an increase in campers expected in Haines Junction for this weekends Alsek Music Festival, fire officials with Wildland Fire Management are urging the public to be cautious with any kind of burning.

“We can expect some warm weather in the central Yukon and we have been experiencing very dry conditions in this area lately,” said Duty Officer Mike Sparks, “Although we are expecting temperatures to cool as showers move into southern Yukon, we are not expecting much rain and the fire potential is expected to be moderate to high for south and central Yukon.”

Please remember these campfire safety tips:
• Use a proper fire pit and keep your fire under control at all times.
• Never leave it unattended.
• Ensure a bucket of water and a shovel is always nearby.
• Before leaving the area ensure your campfire is completely extinguished.
• Pour water on the fire and douse the site entirely.
• Stir the campfire until there are no embers and the ashes are cold to touch.

The fire danger rating for Haines Junction is currently extreme, and all burning permits for this area are currently suspended. The public is reminded that all burning permits are suspended in parts of the territory where the fire danger rating is moderate, high or extreme. Campfires are still permitted throughout the territory.

The public is also reminded to be cautious of any wildfires they may notice and report them immediately to 1-888-798-FIRE (3473). This season, there have been 15 wildfires in the territory, burning approximately seven hectares of forest. All of the fires this season have been human caused.
