Current Fire Danger Ratings Wildfire Bulletin #12 June 11, 2008 - 11:00 AM Tankers and Crews Action Two More Lightning Fires in the Klondike Two new wildfires were discovered in the Dawson fire district Tuesday evening, both of which were caused by lightning. At approximately 5:30 p.m. a member of the public reported a small fire near California Creek an estimated 50 kilometres northwest of the city of Dawson. Shortly after, a second fire was reported by the public near Cassiar Creek, 50 kilometres northwest of Dawson. Both wildfires, 2 hectares and 0.01 hectares in size respectively, were immediately actioned by airtankers with additional helicopter support and initial attack firefighters being deployed to the Cassiar Creek fire. “This morning we sent initial attack crews to both of these fires and they will work them throughout the day” said Duty Officer Lorne Harris. “It’s expected these fires will be fully contained shortly and mop up will then begin.” In the past 48 hours there have been four new wildfires detected in the Dawson fire district. This area remains the hot spot in the territory whereas the fire danger rating is at the low level for the remainder of the Yukon. In response to the current conditions in Dawson crews from other parts of the Yukon have been relocated to the klondike to provide additional support. With the recent activity there have now been 20 wildfires in the Yukon this season. Wildland Fire Management would like to thank the public for their continued cooperation in reporting wildfires.
